This is no doubt, an auspicious year for all of us as we are celebrating 150
years of our Alma Mater as well as 25 years of our Alumni Association.
We are fortunate that our Alma Mater has been involving its alumni/ae in many
of the programmes of the College. The joint effort of the Jesuit priests,
professors, non teaching staff and the past and present students, has resulted
in a new model of collaboration.
At St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata, entrants remain as students for a limited
time but continue to be associated with the college for the rest of their lives
as alumni/ae. They are reminded of their duty and commitment to society as “Men
and Women for Others”, which is the motto of the Jesuit Alumni/ae as well as an
essential orientation of the Jesuits. They are also reminded of their
responsibility towards the marginalized and the underprivileged of society. This
gives them a platform for engaging themselves in the process of development of
society as well as an opportunity to meet their old friends and make new ones
when they gather together for the alumni movement. Working in the Alumni they
also get an opportunity to repay their debt to their Alma Mater.
Starting from the 150 Years celebrations of our Alma Mater to the
celebrations of 150 years of the Bengal Mission, the SXCCAA has played an active
role. The presence of the SXCCAA has also been felt in other regular programmes
like the Fr. Joe D’Souza Staff vs. Alumni Cricket Match and the Fr. Joris Nihil
Ultra Debate. Efforts are also on to organize career fairs and book fairs for
the students. SXCCAA also plays an important role in the organisation of Xavotsav. The SXCCAA has always supported the students of St. Xavier’s College
in their co curricular projects. The Alumni/ae has also paid their heart felt
tribute to former teachers like Rev. Fr. Gerard (Babu) Beckers, S.J. and Prof.
Ram Krishna Ghosh.
The SXCCAA is a very important part of the National body as well as the World
Congress of the Jesuit Alumni. The SXCCAA delegation was the largest contingent
in the recently concluded Jesuit Alumni Congress, held in Bujumbura, Burundi.
One of the major areas of the work SXCCAA undertakes is philanthropy. The
Association has come forward to help the Aila affected people and has been
rendering much needed assistance for sustainable development in the village of
Bholakhali in North 24-Parganas in collaboration with the Department of
Social Work and NSS of the College.
With the encouragement given by the Jesuit priests, professors, students and
staff, the Alumni/ae are poised for further participation in the activities of
the college. We hope and pray that our Alma Mater will be able to reach greater
heights in the days to come. It will continue to be guided by the spirit of
“Nihil Ultra” (Nothing Beyond). The association will play a very constructive
and collaborative role not only in St. Xavier’s College but for society at
large.
