B.A. Prospectus 2008-2009

To study B.A., B.Sc. B.Com. or B.B.A., a candidate must have passed the West Bengal Board of Higher Secondary Examination or its equivalent of Plus-2 recognised as equivalent by Calcutta University passing with at least four recognized subjects, (UCPW of CBSE is not recognized by Calcutta University) securing pass marks in each of the four, including not more than 2 languages. English is compulsory. Env. Science / Education / Studies is not to be included.

As per University requirements, any candidate with 50% aggregate at the HS/Plus-2 level qualifies for the study of Political Science or Sociology, at the Honours level. For the study of English Honours he/she should have 50% aggregate plus 45% in English at the previous qualifying examination.

A candidate is not permitted to study a subject at the graduation level, if he/she studied the subject at the Class XII level and did not pass in the subject at the Class XII level.

Students passing the GCE examination of the UK are eligible for admission if they have passed with 2 ‘A’ Levels and 3 ‘O’ levels. Only subjects passed at A-level can be taken for Honours.

For B.A. Honours and General courses the selection is done on the basis of marks obtained in 10+2 Board / Council examination.


SUBJECTS COMBINATION OFFERED :

  1. For BA English (Hon): Two elective subjects, to be selected one each from any two of the three groups: Group A: Pol. Science, or Bengali, or History, Group B. Sociology, or Economics, or Journalism & Mass Communication, Group C. Film Studies.
     
  2. For BA Pol.Science (Hon): Two electives to be selected one each from any two of the three groups: Group A. Bengali or History, Group B. Sociology or Economics or Journalism & Mass Communication, Group C. Film Studies or Elective English.
     
  3. For BA Sociology (Hon): Two electives to be selected one each from any two of the three groups: Group A. Pol.Science or Bengali or History, Group B. Economics or Journalism & Mass Communication, Group C. Film Studies or Elective English.
     
  4. FOR BA GENERAL: Three elective subjects are to be taken, choosing one each from the three following groups A. Pol.Science or Bengali or History, Group B. Sociology, or Economics or Journalism & Mass Communication, Group C. Film Studies or Elective English.


Note :

  • Economics & Film Studies cannot be taken together.
     
  • To encourage the study of Bengali as an elective, seven seats are reserved for those who will opt for BENGALI AS AN ELECTIVE COMBINATION, for any of the three Honours subjects and five seats are reserved for B.A. general.
     
  • The number of seats in Journalism & Mass Communication is limited and allotment will be linked to merit and will be confirmed shortly after admission.


GENERAL SUBJECTS WITH LIMITED SEATS

A. Choice of STATISTICS / JOURNALISM & MASS COMMUNICATION as General Subject.

  • At the time of admission, confirmed allocation is not possible.
     
  • Some other suitable subject will have to be taken provisionally.
     
  • Preference will be noted.
     
  • After completion of admission process a merit list will be prepared, for those candidates who have given preference for STATISTICS / JOURNALISM & MASS COMMUNICATION
     
  • Allocation will be made according the merit list, subject to availability of seats.
     
  • In case of selection, confirmed allocation will be made for STATISTICS / JOURNALISM & MASS COMMUNICATION. Otherwise the provisionally allocated subject will be confirmed as the General subject. This will be completed by 15-07-2008.


B. Choice of Modern Indian Language :

In case the candidate had Bengali / Hindi at XII level and the candidate's mother tongue is Bengali / Hindi, the same language will have to chosen in college. Otherwise, Alternative English will have to be chosen.
