General Information
for Admission to B.Sc. 2011-2012
As per University of Calcutta requirements, for Admission
to BSc Honours degree, the candidate must have
(a) 50% aggregate and a
minimum of 45% in the subject taken as Honours,
or
(b)55% in the subject chosen
for Honours.
English is compulsory.
To apply to St. Xavier's College a student must fulfill, in addition to the
above, the eligibility criteria for application as
defined by the College.
A candidate is not permitted to study a subject at the graduation level, if
he/she studied the subject at the Class XII level and did not pass in the
subject at the Class XII level.
Students passing the GCE examination of the UK are eligible for admission
only if they have passed with 2 ‘A’ Levels and 3 ‘O’ levels. Only subjects passed
at A-level can be taken for Honours. Candidates with projected mark sheets are
not eligible.
For Computer Science Honours or General, a candidate must have passed
Physics with Mathematics at the 10+2 level.
For Economics Honours, a candidate should have passed class XII with
pure Mathematics as a subject. Business Mathematics is not accepted for
Economics honours.
SUBJECTS COMBINATION OFFERED :
- B.Sc. Mathematics Honours: with
any one of the following combinations: a. Physics and Computer
Science, b. Physics and Chemistry, and c. Statistics and Economics.
- B.Sc. Physics Honours: with
Mathematics (compulsory elective), and either Chemistry or Computer Science
as second elective.
- B.Sc. Chemistry Honours: with
Mathematics (compulsory elective), and either Physics or Microbiology
as second elective.
- B.Sc. Statistics Honours: with
Mathematics (compulsory elective), and either Computer Science or
Economics as second elective.
- B.Sc. Computer Science Honours:
with Mathematics and Physics as the electives.
- B.Sc. Economics Honours: with
Mathematics (compulsory elective), and either Statistics or Political
Science as second elective.
- B.Sc. Microbiology Honours:
with
Chemistry (compulsory elective) and either Physics or Computer
Science as second elective.
- For B.Sc. with Mass communication and
Videography as MAJOR, Film Studies is compulsory. The second elective has to
be chosen from the following subjects: . Political
Science or Bengali or History or Sociology or Economics.
- M.Sc (5 yr, integrated, no lateral
movement after 3 yrs) Biotechnology : Physics, Chemistry, Maths & Biology
/ Biotechnology.
Note : Chemistry Honours students taking
Microbiology as a general subject may not be eligible for studying M.Sc.
(Chemistry) in Calcutta University, Jadavpur University etc.

Choice of Modern Indian Language:

Alternative English will be given only to students not having Hindi or
Bengali at the Class-X level.
