Educational Multimedia Research Centre
(EMMRC)
Educational Multimedia Research Centre (EMMRC), St. Xavier's College,
Calcutta was established in 1986 for producing undergraduate educational
television programmes for the Countrywide Classroom of the Government of India.
The Centre was rechristened as Educational Multimedia Research Centre in 2004
and in addition to producing television programmes it also produces e-content.
The programmes made by EMMRC are telecast on Doordarshan (DD-1) for the
entire country between 5.30 a.m. and 6.00 a.m. everyday. In addition to this
Gyandarshan and DD Bharti telecast these programmes at different time slots
everyday. Programmes are now made also in Bengali and they are telecast on DD-7
four times a week under the title of 'Barnali'. At present this programmes are
telecast between 9.30 a.m. and 10 a.m., Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and
between 4.10 p.m. and 4.40 p.m. on Saturday.
A channel dedicated entirely to Higher Education was launched in 2003. The
channel known as Vyas, telecasts programmes 24X7. These are mainly programmes
made on the syllabus and they follow a lecture mode of presentation.
The basic objectives of all these programmes is to update, upgrade and enrich
the syllabi, especially in the rural and semi-urban areas of India. These
programmes also try to build awareness about the rich and varied culture and
tradition of India.
EMMRC is presently situated at 50, Circus Avenue, Kolkata - 700017. The
working hours are between 9.00 a.m. and 5.30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Over
the period of 17 years, EMMRC has produced 10170 English programmes. In addition
to this it has produced 308 Bengali programmes. 80 programems are converted into
e-content and they are available on the website:
www.ugc-cec.edu. This Centre has won a
total of 48 national awards in different All India Video Competitions held over
the years.
