Science Association
The St. Xavier's College Science Association (SXCSA), after a long hiatus,
has now burst forth in the college society scene in a big way. It had long been
in a state of dormancy but now, after a year has gone by, we are one of the most
prominent associations in the college, fully up and running It has been an
extremely self enriching and memorable experience so far, for all who are
associated with SXCSA.
Our first goal was to bring out a science magazine, which would be well at
par with any standard magazine of its kind in terms of quality and content. We
were quite apprehensive initially about the kind of response we would receive,
judging by SXCSA's recent history. However we were pleasantly
surprised by the tremendous enthusiasm shown by teachers and students alike.
Articles Literally Poured in from all the science departments and the editorial
board had a tough time sorting out the best articles. Eventually, it was in
April 2008 that "PEBBLES", our very own science magazine came into existence. It
was indeed a matter of great pride for us that the magazine won acclaim and
adulation from all.
Next, we at SXCSA decided to organize an intra college debate and quiz
competition to promote scientific awareness. Students registered themselves for
the events and auditions were held. Four teams from different departments were
short listed for the debate finals and six teams for the quiz competition. The
finals were held on 25th September, 2008. Subid Chakraborty and Shivangi Shah of
Economics Hons., with their brilliant oratorical Prowess were the winners of the
debate. The team from Physics Hons. held the top spot in the quiz, beating
Chemistry Hons. in a nail biting tiebreaker. The event turned out to be a major
success with a huge students turn-out.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank our Principal, Fr. P.C.
Matthew, Vice Principal Prof. Albert Gomes, and all the teachers, especially Dr.
Biswanath Lahiri and Dr. Subhankar Ghosh for their constant support in all our
endeavors. My heartfelt gratitude also goes out to the students who contributed
articles, magazine designers, the editorial board, our sponsors, volunteers at
the events and everyone else who has been involved with SXCSA in some way or the
other.
We have travelled a long, arduous road but we pledge to keep walking. The
SXCSA will continue with its mission of scientific awareness and we Plan to
organize scientific exhibitions, Panel discussions, debates, quizzes and various
other events to keep the spirit of scientific discovery alive. We have been
greatly emboldened by your support and trust in us so far and we expect, and
need the same from you in the forthcoming year. I am confident that our working
committee will again pull off a very successful year, earn many more adulations
for SXCSA and continue to uphold the institution's motto-"NIHIL ULTRA".
