CORE COMMITTEE OF THE ACADEMIC COUNCIL (CCAC)
Prof. Ashis Mitra (Secretary)

Objectives and Functions:
The Academic Council is the highest body in all academic matters. It reports to the Governing Body only. Since it is a large structure, it cannot meet too often. The usual frequency of A.C. Meetings is twice in a year. Since for the day to day operations, many academic decisions need to be made urgently, the Core Committee of the Academic Council has been formed in the Academic Council itself to deal with such urgent situations. All decisions made in the Core Committee are ratified at the subsequent Academic Council meeting.

Achievements/Progress: Importance of the Core Committee meetings is self evident. It has been meeting at short notice when the situation so demands. It carries out its business promptly.

INTERNAL QUALITY ASSESSMENT COMMITTEE (IQAC)
Prof. Ashis Mitra (Secretary)

Objective: A continuous effort is needed to ensure that high quality is maintained in all academic matters. The Committee keeps track of this matter. Syllabus updating, examination system reviewing are all part of quality enhancement efforts. However, supervision is needed in this respect. This role is played by this committee.

Progress: Our first UG batch of students under Autonomy passed out in 2009 and did well at various All India Competitive Examinations. This shows that our quality of education is fairly good by all India standards. There is no room for complacency. Continued, vigorous effort to improve quality should be a permanent feature.

CURRICULUM RE-STRUCTURING COMMITTEE (CRC)
Prof. A. C. Gomes (Secretary)

In 2006, autonomy was launched in St. Xavier’s College. More or less the same curriculum as followed in the C.U was kept with some modifications. However, the semester system and credit/grade system was introduced from the very inception of the autonomous system. But three years of classroom experience has shown that the honours level study along with two general level study etc was becoming too demanding for the students as well as for the teachers in the semester system time frame. One alternative could be an integrated approach to curriculum formulation e.g. Physics department may formulate for themselves how much Mathematics and how much Chemistry are needed for a Physics honours course. This may eliminate the load of two full course general subjects. However such suggested changes cannot be brought in over any short period of time. Also extensive liaison with the C.U. is necessary before such changes are introduced.

Another important point is the question of uniformity of curriculum of different disciplines in the college. Committee is considering this question also.

The Committee has met several times so far. An interim report was submitted to Father Principal before the Pujas in September ’09. The report is being finalized and will be submitted shortly. However, curriculum restructuring is neither a one-step process nor a simple process. Many conflicting factors are posing problems. Harmonizing them is proving to be a difficult task. However we hope to surmount this difficulty at least partially.

RESEARCH COMMITTEE (RC)
Dr. Tapati Datta (Convenor)

‘St. Xavier’s College Centre for Research and Training’ was formally established in the year 2008. However research had always been actively pursued and encouraged by the faculty of the college even before. The establishment of the ‘Centre’ was just an official label to recognize the combined efforts of research activities pursued by the faculty.

One of the activities pursued by the ‘Centre’ is the regular organization of at least two seminars every month. The first of these seminars began in November, 2008, and has continued since then, except for breaks during vacations and recesses. In the age of inter-disciplinary research, a research worker is often on the hunt for research material in an unknown or lesser known subject. In the absence of regular communication, a research worker is often forced to run around searching for information when often, there could be a colleague in the college who is an expert on the subject! Regular seminars where the faculty is encouraged to present his research activities will abolish this gap in knowledge. This will lead to greater mutual appreciation among the faculty and an increase in the scope of interdisciplinary research. These seminars are planned in such a way so as to include all the Departments- Arts, Science, Commerce and Education of the college. As of now, there have been two seminars on Biotechnology, one each in Chemistry, Statistics, English and Bengali, two in Sociology and one in Management. Though these seminars have not yet had a full house, it is evident that the enthusiasm is catching on. Our Principal has urged that the student community should have access to these seminars. It is hoped that this will inculcate in the students a desire to pursue the exciting world of higher education. The Research Committee plans to publish an annual ‘Proceedings’ of the seminars throughout the year.

The Research Committee along with all interested members have had one meeting with the Principal. The Principal reiterated that the college firmly believed that research was conducive to good teaching. A ‘Research Centre’ –equipped with sufficient computer terminals, on-line journal facilities, internet facilities and sufficient space to work undisturbed is also in the planning. Scientific equipment that is useful to more than one discipline, when bought, is to be kept in a common space allotted for the same.

The Research Committee also hopes to arrange ‘workshops’ on topics that are of common interest to many of its members. All these however need careful planning of time. It is hoped that the enthusiasm of its members will help meet all the targets one by one.

REMEDIAL AND TUTORIAL COMMITTEE (RTCC)
Prof. Sumona Ghosh (Secretary)

The Remedial and Tutorial Committee met for the first time on the fourth of November, 2009. The objective of this committee is to motivate and help the academically weaker students to realise their weakness and help them to improve on these fronts. The Committee has decided that tutorial classes shall be organised for such students by the Vice- Principals and the Deans of the respective departments. Identification of such students will take place in two phases – once at the time of admission and second after the semester examination results are declared. It has been decided that the committee will start operating from 2010 January, after the semester results of the first year students and the third year are declared. Tutorial classes organised for such students would be compulsory and attendance for such classes would be considered by Vice- Principals and Deans of the respective departments for allowing such students to sit for their semester examination and for their promotion. Undertaking in writing signed by the parents of such students shall also be taken. Time, day and place for holding such classes will be looked into by the respective Vice-Principals and the Deans of various departments. The issue of counseling of such students will also be considered. It has been suggested that to start with, initially, ten remedial classes for a subject will be allotted.

IT RESOURCE MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE
Prof. Shalabh Agarwal (Convenor)

Objectives:
Information technology (IT) is becoming increasingly significant and continues to make tremendous impact in the way various functions are carried out within the College. The College can no longer make important decisions without including elements of IT.

IT Resource Management allows the administration to analyze, monitor and anticipate the utilization and performance of the IT infrastructure by providing an enterprise wide view of IT services and resources. The main aim is to ensure delivery of IT services and resources in an efficient, cost-effective manner while demonstrating measurable value to the benefits.

The IT Resource Management committee details a plan of how the College will use IT to ensure the effective management and delivery of high-quality information to be used and shared in a secure and cost-effective manner. The plan includes goals, objectives and outcomes to establish a solid IT infrastructure foundation for the College.

The purpose of this committee is to identify, document and communicate the IT needs of the College. The committee presents the strategies that will be implemented to ensure that IT resources are applied so that they align with the actual needs and that IT is used effectively to help achieve the goals of the College. The dynamic nature of information technology requires a persistent effort to monitor the emergence of new IT systems, hardware and software. The committee has a responsibility to review these new technologies and recommend the most appropriate technology at the right time.
