National Cadet Corps
- "Do you
have it in you ?"
The National Cadet Corps was instituted in the year 1949.
N.C.C. as an organisation is contributing towards development of the youth in the country. St. Xavier's College N.C.C. unit is affiliated to 20 Bengali Bn. N.C.C. (Army).
The Motto of N.C.C. is UNITY and DISCIPLINE. Training in the N.C.C. consists of the basic training of the Regular Armed Forces ( Army, Navy and the
Air force) provided throughout the educational year every Sunday starting from the month of July to March for three years. Training includes weapon training, drill, map reading, military history geography, civil defence, first aid.
Other activities include adventure training like parasailing, para-jumping, trekking, mountaineering, cycle expedition etc. N.C.C. also participates in social activities like blood donation,
tree plantation, Medical aid camps, eye donation, natural calamity relief etc.
Every cadet has to attend a minimum of the one Annual Training camp in addition to 75% attendance every year to qualify for the 'B' certificate exams held at the end of the 2nd and 3rd year of N.C.C. respectively.
Last year, two cadets got selected for the IMA and NDA from this unit, this year one girl cadet participated in the Republic Day Camp-2000 (Prime Minister's rally) at New Delhi.
Students who are willing to join the N.C.C. may contact Mr. T. K. Samaddar, N.C.C. Officer, St. Xavier's College.
Xavier's NCC
NCC was introduced in St. Xavier's College in the year 1950, since then under
the guidance and control of the Lt A.P. Mondal, it has been one of the most
active departments of the college. We can say that this dept is for the students
and by the students. At present it is being lead by the third year cadets Senior
Under Officer (S.U.O) Padamvir Sing and Junior Under officer (J.U.O) Debayan
Patra. The NCC cadets of St. Xavier's College come under the 20 Bengal Battalion
NCC. It is a combined battalion and it gives equal opportunity for both boys as
well as for girls. Each year when the freshers join the college they show a very
good response towards the department, but due to the limited number of vacancies
handful of them get a chance to join. Our cadets achieve the best results year
after year, not only at the national level but also at the international level.
In 2006, two of our cadets represented India at the international platform. SUO
Soumit Biswas and SUO Payal Dutta had participated in the Republic Day Parade at
New Delhi on the occasion of celebration of our 58th republic day. Both of them
represented India being the part of the youth exchange program in Vietnam and
Singapore respectively. Through these Youth Exchange Programs the cadets get the
opportunity to interact with the students and the army of different countries
like Singapore, Vietnam, Bhutan, United Kingdom, etc. All the expenses relating
to the visit of cadets is sponsored by the Government of India. More over the
girl cadets of our college have also made us proud by attending the Thal Sena
camp. In addition to that w have also produced many cadets who have been
commissioned in the Indian Army as Officers ; recently cadets like SUO Agnish
Ghosh and CSM Justin Joshep have also been commissioned in the army. Our cadets
also participate in different other camps through out the year like CATC Camp,
Army Attachment Camps, Mountaineering and Trekking Camps, NIC Camp, etc. Last
year we received the best college award in the CATC camp organized by the 20
Bengal Battilion. NCC also organizes different social service programs like
Blood Donation, Eye Donation Camp and Traffic Management Trainning. We also gave
security cover to the Hon able Vice-President of India at the convocation
ceremony held at St. Xavier's College on 18th Jan 2008. We helped the
authorities to control the crowd on the Sports Day and at Beyond Barriers this
year.
In one year we conduct parades on 20 Sundays in which the cadets are given
the training for the following :
- March Past
- Map Reading
- Weapon Training
- Weapon Drill
- Firing
- Health and Hygine
- First Aid
In addition to the above activities the cadets are also shown movies on N.C.C,
Indian Army and military training Various competitions are also organized like
debate, essay and general knowledge. From time to time various camps are
organized for personality development, leadership skills, group training as to
how to face an interview and how to master a group discussion. Cadets can also
avail the CSD canteen facility which enables them to buy products from military
canteen at a very subsidized rates.
