Swar - The Women's Cell
THE WOMEN's CELL - SWAR is the voice of today's women irrespective of caste,
creed, religion, geographical boundaries - SWAR reaches out to all women and
tries to create awareness among women regarding their existing status - good and
bad. Headed by Dr. Panchali Sen (Pol. Sc. Dept.), the women's cell constitutes
of a core committee, members consisting of Srijani, Arundhati, Swetanjali,
Soumodeep, Paloma and students from various other departments who come together
to form one voice that speaks aloud honouring women's rights. It is an
association speaking exclusively for women's development in today's modern era -
their miraculous success keeping at par with the men journeying from chaos to
cosmos - to the realms of outer space. We are proud to announce that much of the
success and popularity among students and teachers has also been contributed to
by the active male participation in the Women's Cell. It is truly a signature of
a Modern India.
On 8th of March, 2008, the members of the Women's Cell celebrated the Women's
Day in St. Xavier's College auditorium. The programme was inaugurated by the
Principal Fr. P. C. Mathew, Vice Principal A. C. Gomes, the Head of the
Committee Panchali Sen, Father Felix Raj and other esteemed dignitaries. The
presence and participation of the teachers and students from all other
departments alike made the event a greater success than anticipated.
The Guest of Honour, DC Central - Damayanti Sen, delivered a very warm speech
which encouraged all the students to do something for themselves as well as for
the women who are suffering around them. A documentary was screened on the
pitiable plight of women in the various tribal areas and villages of India. The
documentary showed how awareness was slowly percolating among the tribal women
through education. The documentary film was an eye opener for the students and
gave them a new lease of energy to work harder for spreading more awareness
besides their academics and extra curricular activities. The Women's Cell tries
to create the idea of a 'New Woman' who is independent, confident and
successful.
Recently, a survey organised by the members of the committee on the "The
Awareness of Women regarding Violence on Women." The students had interviewed
women from different classes, ages, backgrounds regarding their awareness on
violence meted out on women. The feedback clearly shows that women today are
gradually becoming aware about women issues.
SWAR - Women's Cell is an association which acts towards creating this
awareness about women problems among the students who would be the future
citizens of India. So Women's Cell speaks it all through its very name and the
students along with the teachers form its SWAR - 'voice of women'.
