The Scheme is titled "Convergence Scheme". IGNOU Convergence Scheme converges the best of Open and Distance Learning systems(ODL) and Conventional Educational Systems. The objective of the scheme is to achieve the targets set out in the Eleventh Plan Document for Higher Education, and focussing on access and equity issues.

The Scheme ,jointly conceived by University Grants Commission(UGC), Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), Distance Education Council(DEC) and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) under the guidance of the Ministry of Human Resources Development , aims to focus on enchancing the quality and quanyity of education delivery in the context of social dimensions of the country, with a thrust on capacity buliding and strengthening of the conventional university and collegiate education system.

Convergence of the face-to-face mode teaching departments of conventional universities with their distance education directorates/ correspondance course wings as also with open universities/ institutions offering distance education, shall be impressed upon to bridge the gap in distance and conventional face-to-face mode of education.

There are more than 400 Partner Institutions offering around 150 IGNOU programmes and 75000 students enrolled under the IGNOU Convergence Scheme. The Partner Institutions in the rural areas have benefited a large number of r ural students especially women students who are otherwise deprived of higher education/vocational education. To mention few, the Computer Literacy Program of Ignou which is a non-credit programme has influenced in imparting the computer skills to the common men and women through the Partner Institutions in the north-Eastern region and Eastern region of rural area.

Vision and Mission
