Dear Learner,
It is my great pleasure to welcome you all for joining
Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) attached to
St. Xavier’s College (Study Centre Code: 2802). You have
joined IGNOU in the new era or the Millennium and I am quiet
sure that all of you will give your best effort to make this
programme a grand success. St. Xavier’s College study centre
started to offer the Management Programme (MP) from 1988. In
1991 for the first time in West Bengal we started to offer
“Diploma in Computers in Office Management (DCO)” from our
study centre. Again from 1994 for the first time in West
Bengal we started to offer “Master in Computer Application
(MCA)”. I am extremely happy to tell you that we have
produced Gold Medallists in DCO (1995) and in Post Graduate
Diploma in Financial Management (1996). I am confident that
our students will get more and more Gold medals in future.

A brief
introduction to St. Xavier's College Study Centre Code-2802
Indira Gandhi National Open National was established by an
Act of Parliament in 1985 to achieve the following
objectives:
- To democratize higher education by taking it to the
doorsteps of the students.
- To provide access to high quality education to all
those who seek it irrespective of age, region
or formal qualifications.
- To offer need-based academic programmes by giving
professional and vocational
orientation to the courses.
- To set and maintain standards in education in the
country as an apex body
St. Xavier's College is a study Centre of IGNOU and the
study centre code is 2802. The first 2 digits i.e. 28 stands
for the state code and the last 2 digits i.e. 02 stands for
the study centre code. Our study centre office situated in
Room No. 7 (Ground Floor) of the College Building. For
getting any help / information / clarification about IGNOU
you have to contact our study centre office hours only. Our
Study Centre's staff will try their level best to give you
the assistance as much as they can.

Management Programme
(MP)
IGNOU provides the following Management Programmes for the
distance learners :
1 Master of Business Administration
(MBA)
2 Diploma in Management (DIM)
3 Post-Graduation Diploma in Management
(PGDIM)
4 Post-Graduation Diploma in Human
Resource Management (PGDHRM)
5 Post-Graduate Diploma in Financial
Management (PGDFM)

7 Post-Graduate Diploma in Operations
Management (PGDOM)

1. MBA
The MBA Programme consists of 21 course as below :
- All the 11 courses of PGDIM i.e. MS-1 to MS11.
- Five (5) courses from any of the 4
specialisations mentioned above from NO. 4 to No. 7.
- Integrative Module : Compulsory course (MS-91,
MS-100 which is equivalent to 2 courses)
- one elective course from MS-92, MS-93, MS-94 &
MS-97.

2. DIM
The DIM comprises three compulsory and four elective
course out of which a student required to take two courses
as below :
i) Ms-1, MS-2, MS-3 are compulsory courses.
ii) Elective courses : any tow from MS-4, MS-5, MS-6 and
MS-7.

3. PGDIM
PGDIM comprises of following 11 courses :
MS-1, MS-2, MS-3, MS-4, MS-5, MS-6m MS-7, MS-8, MS-9,
MS-10, MS-11.

4. PGDHRM
PGDHRM comprises of any 5 courses of MS-21, MS_22,
MS-23, MS-24, MS-25, MS-26, MS-27
|
5. PGDFM
PGDFM comprises of any 5 courses of MS-41, MS-42,
MS-43, MS-44, MS-45, MS-46.

6. PGDMM
PGDMM comprises of any 5 courses of MS-61, MS-62,
MS-63, MS-64, MS-65, MS-66, MS-68.

7. PGDOM
PGDOM comprises of any 5 course of MS-51, MS-52, MS-53,
MS-54, MS-58, MS- 94.

Some General Rules on Management
Programme:
· A student can opt maximum of 4 courses per semester.
· One can take MS-100 (Project work) after at least 2
semesters. (iii) A course once selected for study, must be
successfully completed within 4 semesters. In case of
failure to do so, the student will be required to seek
Re-Admission by paying fees of Rs. 500/- per course.
However, such a student will not be required to take the
Entrance test again.
· If a student wants to change one course then he/she has to
do it by 31st July for first and second semester
respectively on payment of a fee of Rs. 100/- per course
apart from Rs. 500/- per course. The amount to be paid by
Demand Draft drawn in favour of IGNOU payable at New Delhi
and it is to be sent to Director (SR & E), IGNOU, Maidan
Garhi, New Delhi-110 068.
· The MBA learner has to complete a Project work (MS-100)
under some guide. For fixing a guide the students has to
contact the Co-ordinator. The Co-ordinator will fix some
from the academic counsellors. The student has to send a
project synopsis to IGNOU H/Q. After getting the approval
from IGNOU the student has to send I copy of the project
work to IGNOU. I copy of the same project is to be submitted
to the study centre and I copy is to be given to the project
guide.
· Submission of Assignments is pre-requisite for appearing
in Term-End. For Management Programme total number of
assignment one has to submit is 3 per course. Out of them 2
are called as Tutor Market Assignments (TMAs) and 3rd one is
called as Computer Market Assignment (CMA) or some-time
Tutor Market Assignment (TMA0. The 2 T MAs are to be
submitted to the study centre and the CMA is to be sent to
IGNOU, New Delhi.

Master in
Computer Applications (MCA)
The objective of the MCA programme is to create skilled man
power at the level of programmer, system analyst, project
manager and system manager.
The MCA programme is divided into 6 semesters as mentioned

| The minimum duration of the course
is 3 years and maximum duration is 7 years. The student has
to give 3 Term-End practical exams in 1st year only. In 2nd
year there is no practical term-end exam. In 3rd year also
there is no practical term-end practical term-end practical
exam but one has to do a final project work. The duration of
each practical session is 3 hrs which includes the
counselling and the hands on practice. In each year a
student are supposed get 48 practical sessions. The
attendance in the practical is compulsory.
The pass percentage in any assignment and the Theory
Term-End exam is 40% with an overall average of 50% for a
pass in the course. Depending on the percentage of marks
secured by a candidate who has passed, the divisions will be
awarded as follows :
First Division with Distinction : 75% and above
First Division : 60% and above but less than 75%
Second Division : 50% or more but less than 60%
Unsuccessful : less than 50%
In MCA the students should study the standard books on a
particular topic in addition to the study materials.

Certificate in
Computing (CIC)
This programme aims to fulfill the need of a large section
of people who interested in at least some computer
education. It is a short programme which may be used to
provide an alternative channel for admission to the BCA, and
MCA. The CIC comprises of 4 courses.
CIC-1 : The Context : The basic objective of this course is
to make the student aware that we are living in an
information age.
CIC-2 : The Technology : This course is mainly dealing with
the technology part of Computers.
CIC-4 : The Applications : This course is wrapping up of the
programme with description of a variety of applications. The
applications have been categorised into four namely, office
automation situation, Business, Multi-media and large public
services applications.
CIC-5 : Microsoft Office : This course comprises of
Windows-95, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, access.
The minimum duration of the course is 6 months and maximum
duration is 2 years. Evaluation for each course covers tow
aspects :
i) 30% weightage from CMA & practical assignment
ii) 70% weightage from Term-end exam.
Depending on the percentage of marks secured by a candidate
division will be awarded as below :
First Division with Distinction : 75% and above
First Division : 60% and above but less than 75%
Second Division : 50% or more but less than 60%

Bachelor
in Computer Applications (BCA)
The BCA provides an understanding and skills related to the
use of computer and its application. Its design is based on
the BDP programme of the IGNOU, with a special focus on
computer application and possibly of moving on to an MCA
after completing the BCA.
The minimum duration of the course is 3 years ad the maximum
duration is 6 years. The facilities for counselling and
practical second and third year will, however, not
automatically be extended after first year of study.
Practical sessions in subsequent years is at the discretion
of the University and subject to payment for the same.
During practical 2 students have to share one computer. In
the first year total no of practical sessions is 40 (10
sessions in semester - 1 and 30 sessions in 2nd semester ).
In 2nd year total number of practical session is 40 and in
3rd year total number of practical counselling sessions is
60. Each practical counselling session is equal to 3 hrs.

After passing BCA 3rd year a student can join from MCA 2nd
year.

| SOME GENERAL INFORMATION :
Some Important last date :
· Last date for payment of fees for the 2nd semester 2000 is
31/03/2001
· Last date for payment of fees for the MCA 2nd /4th /5th /
6th Semester 2001 is 31.03.2001.
· Last date for payment of fees for the BCA 2nd / 4th / 6th
Semester 2001 is 31.03.2001.
Last date for submission of Term-End exam form to Director
(SR & E) :
· 31st March for June Term-End exam and 30th September for
Dec. Term-End exam.
One may send the Form after the last with a late fine of Rs.
100/- (DD) before 30th April for June Term-End exam and 31st
October for the December Term-End exam.
Last date for submission of Assignments of MP :
· 1st Semester : TMA-1 and TMA-2 : 31st March and CMA / TMA
3 : 3-th April.
· 2nd Semester : TMA-1 and TMA-2 : 30th September and CMA/TMA
3 : 31st October.
· However, the University may change the last date for
submission of assignments if it is decided by the board of
management.
Last date for submission of Assignments of MCA/BCA :
Last date is written on the assignment question papers. The
learner has to strictly maintain that date.
