St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata started offering Commerce courses
since 1946. The Commerce Department has contributed enormously
towards the creation of a good number of professionals and
entrepreneurs in the country, who have brought national and
international fame to the College. The motto of the College is
‘Nihil Ultra’ (Nothing Beyond). Our aims are set on the highest
ideals.
St. Xavier’s College was recognized as an “A” grade
institution by the National Assessment & Accreditation Council
in 2003. It was also declared a Centre with Potential for
Excellence by the University Grants Commission on 9th
May 2006.
July 2006 ushered in a new era in the history of St. Xavier’s
College when the autonomous status was conferred on it by the
University of Calcutta. The institution is the first autonomous
college in West Bengal. The implications of the autonomy are
that the college is free to frame its own curriculum and courses
of studies as well as adopt innovative methods of teaching. A
continuous process of performance evaluation of the students can
also be undertaken. The degrees are conferred by the parent
University with the name of the College being indicated in the
certificates.
The College, which had already started PG courses in Computer
Science and Bio-technology, introduced Post-graduate Course in
Commerce (M.Com.) since September 2007. The curriculum and
syllabi had been framed by the faculty of the Commerce
Department with active co-operation of the people from industry
and academia. The University of Calcutta has approved the same.
The course
curriculum aims at (i) offering modern and quality education in
the higher studies in Commerce; (ii) to assist the students to
have competitive edge in a globalised environment; (iii)
providing specialized knowledge and skills with practical
orientation through industry exposure; (iv) facilitating the
development of competency for research in the various upcoming
fields of commerce, and (v) developing human resources with
social values to cater to the needs of industries and academia
at national and international level.
