The Department
Brief History of the department
The history of Education Department of St. Xavier’s College goes
way back to the year 1940. However, it was in the session
1961-62 that the training of teachers through the Department
began in a full fledged way. The Department being a part of St.
Xavier’s College, which was then one of the colleges under
Calcutta University also functioned under the parent university.
From 6th March 2006 St. Xavier’s College was declared as an
Autonomous College by the University Grants Commission and
Calcutta University. Since then we have been functioning as a
department under this Autonomous College.
Major Thrust Areas
The education and training of teachers in the development of
knowledge, cultivation of positive attitudes and equipping them
with skills in this era of globalization, liberalization and
privatization.
Achievements of Staff and Students
We can proudly claim to have played an instrumental role in the
shaping of individuals with well groomed personalities, with a
zest for social reconstruction and a burning desire to transform
the unjust social structures of society. Today many of our
students have been absorbed by various institutions and continue
to play an integral role in education, administration,
co-curricular activities and other spheres. The results of our
students have almost always been excellent with a large majority
of first class holders.
The most important achievement of the staff and students can be
summed up by the fact that the department has crossed several
milestones not only in the fields of academics but also in other
related areas such as administration , social and community
service, co-curricular activities both within as well as outside
the college. The teacher education programme that the department
is involved in continues to focus on the preparation of men and
women for others. Teacher’s in the true sense of the term ‘Nihil
Ultra’ is the guiding principle that has helped to achieve
excellence in all fields.
Research Projects
The faculty and students are involved in small scale research
projects through the Social and Community Service Programme,
Action Research programme as well as Project related to the
several subjects taught in the department such as History ,
Geography, Life science, Physical science , Mathematics ,
Bengali, Hindi etc. Two of the senior members of our faculty
have completed their Ph.D and one member is currently involved
in the completion of her doctorate degree. A senior member of
the faculty has completed her M.Ed. which has a research
orientation while two of the faculty have completed their M.Phil
programme. A senior member of the faculty has undertaken a Minor
Research project on Education entitled ‘Achievement in Physics
in relation to Aptitude in Physics and Creativity in Physics’.

college it has access to several facilities and can avail of
multiple opportunities. The department has spacious rooms, audio
visual facilities, tutorials and laboratories for Geography,
Psychology, and other science subjects. The computer laboratory
offers hand on experience to the trainees. The Mathematics
resource room and the Psychology resource room provide the much
needed hands on experience to the students in their respective
subjects.
