AdmissionSt. Xavier’s College offers one of the best BBA programmes in the state. It
is meant for students who are motivated, disciplined, ready and eager to move
ahead in the business world. It may sound a little too far fetched but our
students appreciate that they learn theory as well as practical applications. It
is based on the premise that the true mark of learning is not just what you know
but what you can do with what you know. Our priority is to provide students a
top-notch curriculum where emerging business leaders can build on their
professional experiences and successfully contribute to their firms. This
innovative programme is facilitated by multi-media learning environment enriched
by face-to-face faculty mentoring and coaching. Ultimately, students will be
able to demonstrate mastery of more than 30 business competencies—the skills
that employers are looking for today.
The curriculum implemented in 2006 was as per the then existing curriculum of
the Calcutta University. However, post autonomy, as per recommendation of the
Board of Studies, greater emphasis was given to Mathematics and Economics. The
syllabus continues to be as per the erstwhile Calcutta University course. The
BBA programme is an honours course with specialisation in three disciplines,
Financial Management, Marketing Management and Human Resource Management.
The department only offers specialisation in the first two disciplines.
The syllabus framed under the autonomous structure is possibly unique, given
the core values it imparts in terms of intellectual depth, leadership skills and
social awareness. The curriculum is flexible and broad & it offers students the
opportunity to develop an academic programme that is tailored to their
interests. The syllabus is contemporary and consists of 27 compulsory courses,
four specialisation from any of the three elective groups. It lays strong
emphasis in connecting theory and applications. In the various courses key
concepts are covered and then students are exposed to how they are played out in
real business situations using case studies. We strongly believe that effective
English communication skills are a must and thus the programme includes 100
marks, equally spread over two semesters, of Business Language and
Communication. The programme also provides adequate exposure to information
technology. Each course is divided into modules and appropriate weightage is
given, in terms of credits, based upon content and teaching hours.
After the experience that we gathered in conducting the programme for the
first three years, after autonomy, it was felt that some amount of revision was
required. The curriculum and syllabus was, therefore, revised after consultation
with subject experts, both from Calcutta University and the industry. The
revised programme, made applicable from July 2009 (i.e. the academic session
2009-12), consist of 28 compulsory courses and 4 specialisation papers from any
of the elective groups.
In order to further strengthen the skills of the students and to expose them
real business situations, the programme mandatorily requires the completion of
the following: (i) term paper of 100 marks in Semester-IV, and (ii) an
internship in the third year leading to the project work and comprehensive viva
of 200 marks in Semester – VI. Internship, project and viva give students an
edge over other undergraduate courses. It enriches them and adequately exposes
them to real world situations.
Student’s attendance in class room lectures are closely monitored. Continuous
internal assessment ensures students participation in classroom activities.
Assignments have made the students more involved. Student’s seminars have
ensured that the presentation and public speaking skills are adequately
nurtured. Weaker students are offered tutorial classes. Under the semester
system subject matter is intensively covered. Besides, the semester system also
ensures that student progress is gradual and is not hampered by the burden of
the syllabus. However, given the diverse range of subjects covered by the
course, may be there is scope for further improvement and streamlining.
Students are encouraged to participate in co-curricular & extra curricular
activities. The exposure students gain from outreach programmes, involvement in
NCC and NSS activities help them in their overall development. Students have
also shown a lot of interest in writing articles and paper presentation. This
has also helped them in accumulating their non-academic credits.
Students have also performed well in various all India competitive
examinations like CAT, XAT, and MAT. A few students even got placed through
campus placements. Many students have also gone abroad for higher studies. The
students of the department also bring out the departmental magazine, X-ecutive.
The hugely successful and popular departmental fest, Xavier Management
Convention (XMC), is held every year in March. We sincerely believe that unless
students are involved, they possibly feel left out. But the dedication shown by
our faculty members is also praise worthy.
Since its introduction in 2002
under the University of Calcutta, the BBA program has evolved
substantially. Today the program offered at St. Xavier’s College
is possibly unique given the core values it imparts in terms of
Intellectual Depth, Leadership Skills and Social
Responsibility. St. Xavier’s approach to management
education aims at the holistic formation of future leaders with
unmatched professional competence and a strong ethical
perspective.
The curriculum is flexible and broad and gives students the
opportunity to develop an academic program that is tailored to
their ambitions and interests. The college offers specialization
in three areas: Finance and Accounting, Marketing and Human
Resource Management.

At St. Xavier’s we believe
theory is important, but it is of little value if students don't
know their practical application. The program therefore lays
strong emphasis in connecting theory and application. In the
