Profile |
AdmissionA course of Bengali language and literature is taught in St. Xavier’s College
as modern Indian language which is a compulsory subject for B.A., B.Sc., B.Com.
students whose vernacular is Bengali. At the undergraduate level the department
also offers an Elective course of four semesters for honours students and
six-semester course for general students. To teach these courses at present the
department has four teachers-Prof. Dr. Madhumita Bhattacharya Roy, Prof. Rajib
Choudhury, Prof. Md. Mahiuddin and Prof. Subhasish Mondol.
Before the college got autonomy, the department, like other departments
followed the syllabus of C.U. but after getting autonomy, the department framed
its new syllabus with the guidance of its Board of Studies members from C.U. and
J.U. The standards and the methods of learning offered by the new syllabus have
received appreciation of both the academics and the students.
Professor Mondol is into active research. Professor Choudhury is associated
with a literary journal as a honourary member of editorial board and hasedited
several Bengali books also.
The students are consistently performing well in the semester system and
sometimes doing better than their honours subjects. The department is planning
to place a proposal to college authority for starting honours course in Bengali.
Many of our ex-students are working in press and media where they are getting
benefit of studying Bengali as an elective subject.
