Admission
Computer Science Honours was introduced in St Xavier’s College,
Kolkata in the year 1998. The first batch passed out in the year
2001. Almost all the students secured first class in their Hons
Course. Debmalya Mitra from the department was the university
topper that year. In course of time the department has produced
several university toppers on a consistent basis. The Computer
Science General course was introduced in the year 2001. The
first post graduate course in the college was introduced in the
year 2005 in the form of M.Sc. Computer Science. The students of
the first batch passed out in 2007 with most of the students
being placed in reputed companies like CTS, Mckinsey, IBM etc.
Along with this the department has a tie up with Oracle
University for holding OCA and OCP courses. The department also
has a tie up with IBM for holding MS-Tech course in Computer
Technology under University of Mysore.
The department has organized seminars and workshops on a
consistent basis. A one-day seminar on "Data Mining and Data
Warehousing", was held in St Xavier’s College auditorium on
31.10.09. More recently, a one-day seminar on the same venue on
"Modeling and Simulation Techniques for computation Problems
using MATLAB" was organized on 01.10.2010. This was followed
by a one-day workshop on "MATLAB and Simulink Toolboxes"
for college teachers and researchers. This event was held in the
newly inaugurated Central Computing Facility. Both these events
were held in association with the Computer Society of India,
Kolkata Chapter. The department is thinking of organizing an
invited talk from an eminent researcher in computer science in
February 2011.
Now about the various staff members: Prof. Anal Acharya has
published several papers in international journals like AIP,
IJCSI etc. Prof P.K. Chakrabarti has recently designed an
interfacing of a chain of computers with solar panel. Dr. Asoke
Nath recently presented a paper on cryptography in Las Vegas,
USA. Prof Shalabh Agarwal completed his PGCCL form IGNOU in
2009. Prof. Sankar Das and Prof. Siladitya Mukherjee completed
their M Tech s in IT discipline in 2009 from BESU and Jadavpur
University respectively. Prof. Romit S. Beed was a part of the
magazine committee for the annual college magazine Xaverian
2010. He is also the deputy president of the SXC Students
union. Prof. Sonali Sen and Prof Jayati Ghosh Dastidar recently
completed their refresher and orientation courses from Jadavpur
University. Prof. Debabrata Datta joined as a full time
Assistant Professor in the department from 19th July, 2010. Mr.
Kaushik Goswami joined as a full time teaching assistant from
1st July,2010. He has recently completed his B-level. The
department has four laboratory assistants: Mr. Rana Biswas looks
after the M.Sc. Computer Science lab and the hardware lab. Mr.
Totan Karmakar, Mr. Abhijit Karmakar and Mr. Sujit Chandra looks
after newly constructed Central Computing Facilities.
The placements of the 2007-10 B.Sc. and 2008-10 M.Sc. batch has
been excellent. A large contingent of students has secured
admission in MCA, MSc, B.Tech and M.Tech courses in various
NIT’s, Jadavpur and Calcutta University, BIT, VIT, Symbiosis,BHU
etc. A lot of students are placed in reputed companies like CTS,
Mckinsey, Maruti etc. In addition the students who have
completed post graduation from here are now teaching in reputed
schools and colleges.

ACHIEVEMENTS
The department has consistently produced university toppers:
Debmalya Mitra (2001),
Avik Mitra (2002),
Aneeta Bhattacharyya (2004) and finally
Navarun Dev (2008) with record marks.
The
department has tie-ups with Oracle India for offering OCA and
OCP courses. In a first of a kind in St. Xavier’s,
Industry-Academia partnership was signed with IBM India for
offering MS (Tech) in Computer Science under University of
Mysore. The college also has a tie up with the Indra Gandhi
National Open University (IGNOU) for offering the MCA Course.
SALIENT FEATURES OF THE SYLLABUS
The syllabus had been designed taking note of the
requirements of the software industry and also to facilitate
higher education and research. The syllabus is being highly
appreciated by the industry and higher education institutes.
PLACEMENTS
Most of the students who completed their graduation and post
graduation from the department are placed in reputed software
companies like TCS, WIPRO, CTS, IBM and INFOSYS to name a few.
However a good number of students prefer to go for higher
studies and are successful in getting entry into reputed higher
education institutes in the country and abroad.
RESEARCH WORK
An auto ringing system for the college class timings and a
Wireless Communication System for use in World Congress of
Jesuit Alumni - 2003 was designed by Prof P. K. Chakrabarti.
Prof Chakrabarti also designed an interfacing of a chain of
computers with solar panel. It aims to dispense with
conventional electrical energy consumption. Currently ten
computers are running on it. Prof Chakrabarti is in the process
of designing a system which will be able to run the entire M. Sc
Computer science lab consisting of 40 machines. The department
has conducted two one-day seminars till date: one in 2007 on
pattern reorganization in bio-informatics, another in 2009 in
data mining and data warehousing. Prof Acharya has presented
several papers in International Conferences.
TEACHER STUDENT RATIO
The department has eight full time teachers. In addition to
this, there are several guest faculty members from reputed
universities in and around Calcutta. The total number of
students studying honours and post graduation in Computer
Science is about 130 and 80 respectively. In addition to this
there are about 150 students in the general curriculum.
