Admission
Realizing the importance of IT and Computer application and ever
eager to respond to new challenges, St. Xavier’s was one of the
first institutions in the city, that ventured on computer
education by starting its own computer centre, St. Xavier’s
Computer Centre in 1985. While awaiting the feasibility of the
introduction of Computer studies at the undergraduate level, the
St. Xavier's Computer Centre was formed. The objective was to
offer Computer Education to a wide cross section of people in
Kolkata at affordable rates. In 1994, the St. Xavier's IGNOU
study centre was the first in West Bengal to offer the Master of
Computer Application (MCA) course, making use of the facilities
of the St.Xavier's Computer Centre. This centre has produced
initially many computer literates who later became computer
professionals.
In line with
this philosophy and legacy, St. Xavier’s was one of the first
colleges to introduce computer teaching at the plus 2 level in
the year 1995. The college finally decided to introduce B.Sc.
Computer Science (Honours) in 1998. Because of the quality
education we impart to these students they have found ready
employment as well as opportunities for further studies. Many
renowned IT companies like WIPRO, CTS, IBM and iGATE are
regularly conducting campus interviews and are selecting
reasonable number of final year students for recruitment
purpose. In line with tradition of excellence and high standards
in St. Xavier’s, the results of the department have been
excellent through out. Every year there are quite a few in the
university toppers list.
All the teachers
are dedicated and committed to the cause of the students and
personal care is extended to each student. Audio-visual aids are
utilised to the maximum for effective learning. Several teachers
have prepared presentations on the basis to the syllabus to make
use of the class timings efficiently so as to devote maximum
time in explanation and interaction. This has further improved
the teaching standards and has helped students understand the
subject in depth.
ACHIEVEMENTS
The department has consistently produced university toppers: Debmalya Mitra
(2001), Avik Mitra (2002), Anita Bhattacharya (2004) and finally Navarun Dev in
2008 with record marks. The department has tie-ups with Oracle India for
offering OCA and OCP courses. In a first of a kind in St. Xavier’s,
Industry-Academia partnership was signed with IBM India for offering MS (Tech)
in Computer Science under University of Mysore. The college also has a tie up
with the Indra Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) for offering the MCA
Course.
SALIENT FEATURES OF THE SYLLABUS
The syllabus had been designed taking note of the requirements of the
software industry and also to facilitate higher education and research. The
syllabus is being highly appreciated by the industry and higher education
institutes.
PLACEMENTS
Most of the students who completed their graduation and post graduation from
the department are placed in reputed software companies like TCS, WIPRO, CTS,
IBM and INFOSYS to name a few. However a good number of students prefer to go
for higher studies and are successful in getting entry into reputed higher
education institutes in the country and abroad.
RESEARCH WORK
An auto ringing system for the college class timings and a Wireless
Communication System for use in World Congress of Jesuit Alumni - 2003 was
designed by Prof P. K. Chakrabarti. Prof Chakrabarti also designed an
interfacing of a chain of computers with solar panel. It aims to dispense with
conventional electrical energy consumption. Currently ten computers are running
on it. Prof Chakrabarti is in the process of designing a system which will be
able to run the entire M. Sc Computer science lab consisting of 40 machines. The
department has conducted two one-day seminars till date: one in 2007 on pattern
reorganization in bio-informatics, another in 2009 in data mining and data
warehousing. Prof Acharya has presented several papers in International
Conferences.
TEACHER STUDENT RATIO
The department has eight full time teachers. In addition to this, there are
several guest faculty members from reputed universities in and around Calcutta.
The total number of students studying honours and post graduation in Computer
Science is about 130 and 80 respectively. In addition to this there are about
150 students in the general curriculum.
