The department of journalism at St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata, offers a range of facilities to it students in an undergraduate generic elective course. The course is evenly divided between theory and hands on practical. The students are exposed to a wide range of topics from the discipline like accuracy, ethics, objectivity, writing for the print, television, radio as well as the digital medium. They are encouraged to produce small programs in the format of television and radio. At the same time, they are also given training to make webpages. There is a strong demand for this course and students come from various Honours disciplines like that of English, Bengali, Political Science, Sociology and Mass Communication & Videography in the third and fourth semester of their degree course.
The course offers knowledge on Print, Radio, TV journalism and New Media as well as theoretical approaches to Journalism and Mass Communication studies. The course is designed in such a way that students are not only equipped with professional knowledge but are also inspired to go for higher studies. Ex-students are working in a number of regional and national media houses. The interest of the students towards journalism is ever increasing. Many students from the aforesaid departments are pursuing higher studies in Journalism in various universities and institutes in India as well as across the globe.
