Achievements of NCC Cadets

The academic year of 2016-17 has been another rewarding year with outstanding performances by the cadets of the college. The year witnessed the selection of total 8 NCC cadets of the college in the West Bengal and Sikkim Directorate Team for the Republic Day Parade Camp, New Delhi.

National Cadet Corps (NCC) is the largest youth organization of the country. It is a tri-service organization comprising of the Army, Navy and Air Force, engaged in grooming the youth of the country into disciplined and patriotic citizens. It was established in the year 1949 in its present form, though it follows the legacy of University Cadet Corps, established in 1917. It is administered by the Ministry of Defense, Govt. of India. Its motto is ‘Unity and Discipline’.

St. Xavier’s College NCC acts under 20 Bengal Battalion NCC as its 6th company. It is a combined company, giving equal opportunities to both girls and boys, and having strength of 160 students from various departments. Regular parade sessions are conducted in the college grounds and Fort William.

Abhimanyu Sharma and Tamanna Sultana had the privilege of walking the Rajpath on 26th January 2017 Parade. Out of the eight cadets, six have been conferred with West Bengal Governor’s Silver Medal at Raj Bhavan, Kolkata, two of them received the Director General’s Appreciation Award for exceptional performance at Republic Day Camp and three were selected as Best Cadets of the Directorate. Adding another feather to their cap, seven of them have been selected for Youth Exchange Programme (YEP). Abhimanyu Sharma, Tamanna Sultana and Monica Gogoi have been selected to represent India at Vietnam, Russia and Kazakhstan respectively. Last year, Soutrik Goswami, a third year cadet of Computer Science Department, had represented India at Sri Lanka through YEP. Also, Pallavi Bajaj, a cadet of 2014-17 batch of B.Com(Evening) was selected for YEP Bangladesh.

 

Ronak Jain, a third year cadet of B.Com (Morning) went for Indian Military Academy (IMA) Attachment Camp, in the month of June 2017. In the month of August 2017, as many as 10 cadets went for National Integration Camp (NIC) held at Gujarat.

 

It is a matter of great pride and honour for St. Xavier’s College NCC as two of the Ex-Cadets of the College, Bandhan Bitan Mukherjee and Vikash Kumar Jha, have been commissioned in the Armed Forces this year. They are presently under going training at Officers Training Academy (OTA) and Indian Military Academy (IMA). In addition to this, the ANO of St. Xavier’s College NCC Captain Atish Prasad Mondal has undergone the training for his promotion at OTA, Chennai during the month of November 2016

 

The second edition of Intra-Battalion sports meet ‘Khel’ was organized where the society invited 10 colleges of 20 Bengal Battalion for different sports like football, volleyball, badminton, throwball etc. Two cadets of the college showcased the Equestrian Show which was the flagship event. The event was successfully conducted on 19th March, 2017, and the college bagged the first runner-up trophy.

 

On 15th of August, 2017, like every year, the college celebrated the Independence Day in the college quadrangle. Major General L.B. Chand, Additional Director General, NCC, West Bengal and Sikkim Directorate, was invited as the Chief Guest to hoist the National Flag. The Rashtriya salute was offered to the National Flag, followed by a ceremonial Guard of Honour to the Chief Guest by the NCC Cadets of the college. The programme of Independence Day concluded with a cultural programme by the cadets and the XADAM team.

Indeed, cadets are consistently bringing laurels to the college through NCC and we strive to do even better and better in coming years.

Raghabpur Campus NCC

St. Xavier’s College Autonomous, Kolkata- Raghabpur Campus started with its separate wing of NCC under 20 Bengal Bn. NCC, West Bengal and Sikkim Directorate. Though being under the initiative of the Park Street Campus, Raghabpur Campus decided to open another sub unit for the benefit of the students who travelled a long distance to attend the parade at main campus. The NCC unit of Raghabpur Campus started functioning from 16th July 2017. Approximately 53 cadets have enrolled under first year and second and third year cadets who previously used to attend parades in main campus has now been shifted under Raghabpur Campus Unit. SUO Subhajit Das, a second year cadet of B.Com Department represented the Campus for Republic Day Camp (RDC) in 2016 and NIC Gujarat in 2017. SUO Priti Kanojia, a third year cadet from History Department represented the campus at SNIC Ladakh. Prof. Swaraj Kr. Nandan has been appointed as Prof. in-charge of NCC Raghabpur Campus.
