KOLKATA: St Xavier's College Kolkata has been recommended for UGC grants under the Special heritage status to college scheme. St Xavier's is set to get Rs 3.05 crore. It is part of 19 colleges nationwide to be eligible for this UGC grant, St Xavier's is slated to get the third highest after Cotton College, Guwahati and CMS College, Kottayam.

St Xavier's College gets the grant to establish the Goethel's Library and Research Centre and to preserve its rare books, plates and manuscripts. According to an UGC communique, the proposal assessed by a committee on April 28-29 and May 13, to arrive at the final list of awardees.

A visibly happy St Xaviers College principal Father Felix Raj said, "We are happy that the UGC has once again recognized the excellence of this 155 year-old heritage institution. This grant will be utilized to preserve that heritage."

This new scheme requires applicants fulfilling laid-down objectives for the financial assistance of a one-time lump sum grant of Rs. 10.0 crores to a university and Rs. 5.0 crores to a college during the 12th Five year Plan. According to sources, 50% of the grant allocated will be released as first installment by the UGC to the university or colleges selected under the Scheme. The release of second installment of grant to the tune of 40% of allocation will be done after receiving the utilization certification against the first installment of grant and on receipt of satisfactory progress report. The final installment of 10% of grant will be released after receiving utilization certificate against total allocation and completion documents in case of construction activities.
