5th International Day of Yoga, 2019

The fifth International Day of Yoga was celebrated on 21st June, 2019. The program was graced by our respected Father Principal & Rector, Rev. Dr. Dominic Savio S.J., St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata, and other distinguished dignitaries. Professors, alumni/alumnae members and students of various departments of the college actively participated in the program. The auspicious celebration was held in the seminar hall of the Department of Education. The International Day of Yoga aims to raise awareness worldwide of the many benefits of practicing yoga. This year UN has decided to raise awareness on “Climate Action” through practicing yoga which can provide a solution to climate change, as it creates a harmony between us and nature. So, there are two themes for World Yoga Day 2019, as United Nation has declared the theme as “Climate Action “ and the Government of India has declared the theme for World Yoga Day as “Yoga for Heart”.

Respected Father Principal addressed the audience on this auspicious occasion with his motivational words which was followed by a presentation by Mr. Ajay Gupta, a renowned Yoga Trainer, who enlightened us with the knowledge on the topic ‘An Overview: Yoga’. The second presentation was by Prof. Dona Das Sengupta, on the ‘Practical Application of Yoga in daily life’. An activity session comprising of asana, pranayama and meditation was conducted by Prof. Dona Das Sengupta with all the participants. The participants enjoyed each and every session.

“Essential to the attainment of these national goals is the moral imperative of ensuring social justice and respect for human dignity. The great biblical tradition enjoins on all peoples the duty to hear the voice of the poor. It bids us to break the bonds of injustice and oppression which give rise to glaring, and indeed, scandalous social inequalities. Reforming the social structures which perpetuate poverty and the exclusion of the poor first requires a conversion of mind and heart”. Pope Francis

To commemorate 50 years of the National Service Scheme (NSS) at St. Xavier’s College (Autonomous) Kolkata, a day-long seminar on the theme: ‘Social Responsibility of College Students – Its Need and Relevance Today’ was held on 24th September 2019 in collaboration with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of the College.
