The Placement Cell

The Placement Cell of St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata creates a platform where students can showcase their talents which different companies seek to explore and utilise. Starting from 2003, we have successfully placed a large section of graduates who have appeared for placements. This year especially, the performance has been overwhelming.

 

The Placement Cell is headed by Rev. Dr. Dominic Savio – SJ, and Dr. Amitava Roy, the coordinator. The Cell is led by the Placement officer Mr. Niladri Sinha along with the Placement Advisory Board which consists of Professors and final year students from various departments.

 

Initially the companies are invited to take part in the recruitment drive. Those interested respond and thus register with us for the year for recruitment. The students are intimated and a vast number register for the interview.

 

The interview process usually starts with a Power Point Presentation where the company enlightens the students about their company profile. Those interested then go for the interview, which usually comprises of a written test followed by group discussion and personal interview.

 

The job scenario today is facing the onslaught of ground breaking competition from all fields; and employment into good companies and organizations has become a daunting task. So, for the benefit of its students preparing to face the job market, the St. Xavier’s College Placement Cell has risen to the occasion and has successfully aided in providing opportunities and employment to its outgoing students.

 

With the relentless support of the staff and the students associated with the placement cell and most significantly Rev. Dr. Dominic Savio, S.J. at the helm, we strive to reach a step closer to our ultimate goal of 100% placements for our students.

 

The student committee has been able to create an extensive database of all the potential recruiting companies along with their contact details. Over the past one year, the cell has been successful in establishing an initial contact with more than five hundred companies. This has definitely increased awareness among the companies about St. Xavier’s College being a potential institution for recruitment option. In fact, those companies that have not been able to recruit from the College this year will surely consider St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata an effective option in the following year.

The Placement Cell begins the academic year with the process of volunteer recruitment from the first and second year students. The process is conducted by the Core Committee of third year students. Students are then divided into five groups under team leaders, who perform their office and campus duties on different days of the week. Students apply as they want to help out conduct and manage placement activities. The members contact various corporate and human resource personnel regarding the organization of campus drives. Companies begin with the pre-placement talks followed by the group discussion and interview rounds. Once the recruitment process is completed, students are intimated about their selection within suitable time. Different companies may have different selection criteria and processes for students.

 

The Placement Cell reaches out to the students via its Facebook page as well as its Blog. Regular emails are sent for important updates as well. Beside the regular activities Ernst and Young India organised a competition for B.Com, BBA and Economics students to write a Business Proposal for an unique startup. More than 150 students were took part in this competition and Ms. Shreya Khetan 2nd year students from B.Com. Evening department won the first prize of Rs.one lakh and 3 months internship at EY.

 

Like previous years, this year too, we organized various workshops: Workshop by Ernst Young GDS on “Employability and Personal Branding” for the second year students and for the third year students on “Corporate Life and Soft Skill Development”. We are thankful to Mr. Joel Roshan Dsa – Assistant Manager Campus Programme and Mr. Abhishek Gupta – Senior Manager Assurance for their valuable inputs. Mr. Joel and Mr. Abhishek were very eager to help the fellow Xaverian strain up for corporate jobs. Both of them cherish lasting memories of their three years’ in Xavier’s.

 

A great number of new as well as regular companies visited our college for Placement this year. It started off in August with Futures First being the first, followed by companies such as Tata Consultancy Services, Deloitte, KPMG, Ernst & young, PWC, J P Morgan, Google, Zomato, United bank of Switzerland, Verity Solutions, Axis Bank, Citi Bank, ICICI Bank, HSBC, HDFC Bank, Swiss Re, Oyo Rooms, D E Shaw, Reckitt Benckiser, MuSigma, Pricewaterhouse Coopers, Infosys, Viacom 18, Ogilvy, ICRA, MGH, Mckinsey, Boston Consultancy, Sony India Ltd, Titan, ITC, Z S Associates, Zomato, Addidas, Uber, Grofers and Cognizant. We have placed more than 500 students through on campus drives and off campus interviews from departments like B.Com, BBA, M.Com, Economics ( Hons.) , Mathematics (Hons.), Biotechnology, English(Hons.), Statistics (Hons.), Political Science(Hons .) and Computer Science, with the annual CTC ranging from Rs. 3 lacs to Rs.20.5 lacs. We have students working at companies on various internship offers as well for second and thirds year students.

 

There is a great deal of enthusiasm among final year students when the placement season starts off. Students come forward with their queries regarding companies, placement procedures and the Placement Cell members readily help them.

 

This year has been extremely good for placements and with the economic growth reviving; we expect to invite even more companies next year. The support from the College has been extremely encouraging.

  • Graduation: 60% or 6.0 CGPA above as applicable by the university guidelines.

  • Mandatory to have studied Core Mathematics as one subject in Graduation.
  • Business Maths & Applied Maths will NOT be considered as Core Mathematics in Graduation.
  • A maximum of 3 years of education gap, if any, is allowed between 10th and graduation.
  • No Gaps are allowed in Graduation. Graduation should be completed within 3 years.
  • Education should be regular full time only in 10th, 12th & Graduation recognized by the Central/State Government of India.
  • All Arrears and backlogs need to be cleared at the time of the selection process

Dear All,

KPMG Ideation Challenge (KIC) is an exceptional platform for students from institutes like yours to exhibit and develop ideation and presentation skills. Last year, more than 8,000 applicants from over 500 universities,18 countries participated in the competition. We are thrilled to invite your institute to participate in KIC 2021. 

Through a series of exciting rounds, KPMG will choose ‘Team India’ to represent the country in Global Finals. The competition will be covered by a leading media house and will be a highly rewarding experience for the participants. The entire event will be held virtually this year, owing to the pandemic.

In the 2020 KPMG Ideation Challenge Team India from IIT ISM Dhanbad emerged as the Global Champion.

What can you win?

We have exciting prizes for milestone accomplishments:

National finals– The winning team will receive prize money of INR4 Lakh and the runner up team will get INR2 Lakh. Additionally, they will be rewarded a guaranteed internship with KPMG in India.

Who can participate?

 

The competition is open to students from engineering colleges, non-engineering graduate campuses as well as B-Schools, who are currently enrolled in a full-time undergraduate/bachelor’s degree program with at least one year remaining of their studies. This challenge is for a team of strategic thinkers who know how to deliver rock solid business models, marketing and content strategies as well as fact-minded techies who have skills in prototyping, coding, testing and development and are experts in their field.

 

How does KIC work?

 

Once your institute has agreed to participate in the competition, the students will be able to register in teams of three consisting of members currently enrolled in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), business courses (comprising at least one male and one female member) on the KIC webpage (refer to quick link section in this mail)Please circulate the attached KIC WhatsApp posters/teasers to all the eligible student clubs/communities of your campus.

 

The teams will provide solutions to real-life client problems and learn key skills like design thinking, business modeling, disruptive strategy, prototyping, elevator sales pitches and much more. They are expected to use data and analytics, cognitive methodologies to generate a scalable prototype and a business model/case. Using presentation, communication and innovative thinking, the teams will pitch their ideas to business leaders.

 

After multiple rounds of screening, development and presentation of idea, a winning team will be selected to represent “KPMG in India” in the global finals.

Structure of the competition

  1. Registration (Open now till 27 November 2020)– Confirm participation by registering on link –( https://dare2compete.com/o/kpmg-ideation-challenge-kic-kpmg-135737) and sharing required details of your team along with a 90 seconds video introducing each team member in a unique and creative way and clearly stating what makes the team stand-out from other contenders as well as why the team should win this competition. The video submissions by various teams will be screened to identify teams which qualify to participate in the challenge.
  2. Prelims (23-27 December 2020)– In this round the qualifying teams will undergo an ‘Ideation Workshop’ and mentoring from KPMG in India’s professionals post which they will be required to ideate and conceptualise in detail their idea/solution for the problem statement and submit a presentation in the designated format. Submissions for this round will be screened by a panel from KPMG in India to identify teams which will proceed to the semi-finals. Teams will need to complete this process latest by 27 December 2020.

 

  1. Semi-finals (January 2021)- Teams shortlisted for the semi-finals will be mentored further by professionals from KPMG in India and will present their solution to a KPMG Jury. Winners of semi-finals will then proceed to the national finals. Further, to ensure a diverse blend, KPMG would reserve the right to blend/merge winning teams from the semi-final round.

 

  1. National finals (February 2021)- In this round, eligible teams will work closely with KPMG in India professionals and further hone their idea. They will present the finished version of their solution/prototype to a jury of leading professionals and take a shot at winning the title of ‘National Champion’.

 

  1. Global finals (March-April 2021)- This will be an opportunity for the winning team from the India National Finals to compete with teams from different countries, share experiences and learn in an action-packed event.

 

Over the course of time, you will have access to some of the sharpest and brightest professionals within KPMG member firms. So, the further you get, the more experience you gain and all virtually.

It’s a 2 weeks, work from home Internship Program (only 1 to 2 hours in a day) starting from 16th September 2020

 

Week 1: True Internships are all about Learning

In the first week, you will learn about Personality Development, Relationship Building, and communication skills that will help you to polish your skill set.

 

Week 2: What is Learning without Execution

In the second week, you will learn to develop business strategies, build client relationships with potential customers, and close leads, to become a master in communication and negotiation skills.

The Placement Cell of St. Xavier’s College acts as an integral link between the students and corporate organisations. St. Xavier’s College is one of the first colleges to start a Placement Cell and has facilitated placements for many students. The placement cell functions under the supervision of Mr. Niladri Sinha assisted by students and operates all around the year to arrange campus interviews by the companies. The Cell acts as a contact point for all companies that wish to select students from St. Xavier’s College. It facilitates the whole process from collecting the CVs of the students to organising Pre-placement talks by companies to the final induction process.
